About the Artist
Ansley Givhan is an interdisciplinary artist working and residing in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi in 2016, and her MFA from Tulane University in 2021.
This body of work consists of textile pieces using ink, watercolor, natural pigments, embroidery, sewing, and monoprinting.
“Generally, my work explores themes relating to growth, metamorphosis, and the flux of everyday life. For me, there needs to be an element of discovery in the work to keep things energetic. I employ materials and techniques that leave me a step removed from the outcome. For example, ink and watercolor have their own autonomy as they interact with the fluidity of water and the weave of the surface. With monoprinting, the resulting image is reversed; the weight of the pigments and pressure applied during transfer dictate the consequential image. I embrace this spontaneity, allowing the intuitive nature of the materials to inform the direction of the work.”
